Justin Hurley Knewstub, was born September 30, 1975. He was often referred to as a “gentle giant” with a
commanding stature of height and brawn that was contrasted with a quiet nature. He stood at 6 feet 5 inches,
a defining feature in family photos in which he towered over even other tall family members. He was a force
of nature on the basketball courts of Bryn Mawr and Ardmore to name a few. His dry, witty, and intelligent
sense of humor brought smiles and laughter to the faces of all who knew him. He was a loving uncle to his
nephews Theo and Pete who live in Alaska, they adored him and looked up to him.

He attended Gladwyne Elementary, Good Counsel and graduated from Harriton High School in 1993. He
attended IUP and earned a bachelor's degree in Business and Marketing. He was most recently working
for Crane Payment Industries and had also done some trading as a broker for Vanguard.

Justin had a passion for team sports, he loved being a part of a team. He was always striving to be his
personal best. He inspired his friends, family and teammates through the years and this inspiration lives
on as his legacy. He loved spending time with his large clan of loving and supportive cousins, aunts and
uncles on holidays, yearly family reunions, and gathering with them for many a Philadelphia sporting event.
He was a teacher of maintaining good health. At one time he ventured into business as a personal trainer.
He had immense respect for nature and enjoyed walks with his mother, at Haverford College. His unique
sense of humor was often punctuated with funny pearls of wisdom that he and his sister shared since they
were children. He enjoyed reading books by James Michener and was very knowledgeable about history
and sociological issues. He was a life-long-learner. He was not afraid to take risks and was never short of
business ideas from basketball camps for youth to referral services. He had very high standards for himself.

Justin was a source of light. He was deeply loved and cherished by his family and all who were lucky to
know him. He was a part of many communities where he was known for his commitment and intensity when
it came to all things sports and fitness. He thrived in competitive environments and was blessed with natural
talent for basketball. Throughout his sports career, he earned many accolades as MVP, and was frequently
featured in local newspapers as an outstanding athlete. One year he was named as a Mainline Allstar. He
attended one year at Indiana University in Bloomington in hopes of earning a walk-on spot with the Hoosiers,
but he was then offered a sports scholarship from Delaware Community College and led their basketball team
to a championship title. He continued to keep his skills fresh playing with men’s leagues until his passing on
January 28, 2025. He could still dunk like a pro. He played for nearly 20 years with some of his teammates,
and most recently with his team, “Old School”. Shortly after learning that he had passed unexpectedly, his
teammates decided to win their game for him and to get 100 points. They beat the other team 103 to 39.
They then all signed the winning ball with heartfelt messages, and wrote “We won for you Justin.” It was
given by his teammate Goose as a gift to his mother Carol.

He is survived by a large loving family. Mother Carol Ann Gray and the late Denison Stewart Knewstub,
sister Katherine Stewart Hilpert (nee Knewstub). Brother-in-law Clifford Werner Hilpert and nephews Theodore
Cosmo Hilpert and Peter Orion Dennison Hilpert. The Gray family of Chicago and New York and The Knewstub
family of Philadelphia and New York.
